AFRICAN FACTS AND ACTS ON HAPPINESS

  • Africans are more physical when expressing joy (or happiness) – their eyes, lips, voices and hands, among others are very animated when they’re laughing or smiling.
  • Among the Yoruba people of Nigeria, numerous names given to babies indicate the nature and level of their joy. Over 30 of such names have been identified. Examples include Adedayo (meaning the crown has become joy); Ayotola (joy is enough wealth); Ayowumi (I love joy); Ayotolowafunmi (the joy God has given me); and Temidayo (mine has turned to joy).
  • According to the World Happiness Report 2022, the following are the top five happiest African countries and their global rankings:

1st Mauritius (52), 2nd Libya (86), 3rd Ivory Coast (88), 4th Cameroon (89) and 5th Senegal (90).

Note that Nigeria, which has the largest city (Lagos), largest population (206 million) and largest economy (GDP $445 billion) in the continent, was ranked 118th by the report. That made it the 20th happiest country in Africa.

The report also named Finland as the happiest country in the world, with Denmark coming in second, followed by Iceland, Switzerland, and the Netherlands.
